Dear UCLA parents and families:
College is a wonderful time, but is undoubtedly stressful as well. Transitions are difficult. Your Bruin is faced with the challenges of living away from home, meeting new friends and making the most of UCLA's educational opportunities, all at the same time.
Students have varying degrees of expectations about their autonomy and self-reliance, depending on your family structure, culture and background. But studies have shown that a college student's confidence is enhanced by a perception of support from home. Family support helps students stay in school—and thrive.
Support from family remains vital to the UCLA experience, even as your student strives for independence. That may mean supporting your Bruin's decision as an independent young adult, even while disagreeing with an academic or personal life choice.
Expressing love and respect during times of disagreement nurtures students' self-respect and confidence—imperative life tools for their growing autonomy as adults.
Enjoy your child's development into adulthood, be conscious of your changing roles, and remind them (and yourselves) that time is precious, and these college years, especially, are irreplaceable. And at difficult times in the university experience, know that we are here to help.
Best regards,
